Our first week of pure madness in Oz!

We’ll have to apologise for not updating the blog for every day we spend on our year long journey around Australia but as you can imagine it’s not very realistic. Besides, I’m sure every day won’t be that exciting anyway. Although that’s not been the case so far! You’ll just have to get the idea through our host of crazy photographs taken along the way.

Pretty much every night since we got to Sydney was spent drinking in the Side Bar, which is the hostels own downstairs pub. We all start off with good intentions… “Yeah we’ll only have a quiet few drinks tonight lads”, but after about ten minutes we end up meeting up with a bunch of random people and commencing a night of hilarious drunken dancing. Quality!

One night that stands out was when we had actually just said goodbye to a few new friends who were leaving for pastures anew. We reckoned with their departure would come a quiet night and maybe even going to bed early. Instead however, we managed to go quite crazy (although we were not very drunk) and made the whole bar do the Can Can!! How random is that!

Apart from our evening activities we did actually see quite a lot of this beautiful city on our week long stay. The walk from our hostel to the harbour was about 15-20 minutes and once there you could spend hours walking around looking at Sydney harbour bridge, the opera house, botanic gardens, street performers and of course the quite astonishing women (yes, even in winter!). Speaking of birds (that’s birds, not burds), it’s pretty weird walking around the gardens with parrots and cockatoos flying around in the wild. There must have been a break out at the local pet shop surely.

All in all Sydney was pretty nice, although very wet and windy. The rain has seemed to follow us somewhat wherever we’ve went so far. Hopefully as we head up the coast to Cairns we can manage to outrun it. I think we are a little citied out after our New York, LA, Phoenix experience, so we’re looking forward to getting out on the open road.
