The flight to Fiji was rather horrendous we have to say, with cramped seats and broken headphones a few of us (that’s all of us) were a little ruffled by the time we arrived in Fiji. Things didn’t get off to the best start when we arrived in Fiji and asked for a taxi. The woman (we think she was a woman anyway) exclaimed “You’re staying at Saweni for five days!? That will be very boring for you. The place is not very nice.” This almost put us off to be honest, but we battled on to see what the place was like.
The taxi journey to our apartments was a bit of an eye opener - the island is rather backward and the car itself must have been around 20 years old! The roads are not the best and there are obviously no driving schools on the island! When we arrived it was about six o’clock in the morning and we were extremely tired. The place was all closed up so we wandered around a little.
Stray dogs and what looked like homeless locals walking around the beach soon drew us back to the doors of our apartments which were finally opening. This place didn’t look quite like we expected, but we were very tired and needing our beds...
After a good sleep we awakened, clear headed and ventured out for a proper look around. The locals seemed friendly enough and our accommodation was nice and clean, but the place was completely void of other travellers. There was no way we’d be sitting up too late drinking here, so we decided to head into town to have a look at some hostels. After taking note of a few good places we headed back to watch the sunset.
The setting sun more than made up for the uncomfortable journey here as well as our initial upset with our location - it was easily one of the most beautiful sunsets any of us had ever seen. With the lapping of the waves, the cool ocean breeze and swaying palm trees it was clear we had reached paradise.
